Collaboration Across Boundaries in the Indian Forest Service at ASPA

Maxwell presented a research paper surveying the many lessons learned from the years of collaboration with the IFS at the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) annual conference.

The 2013 ASPA theme, “Governance & Sustainability: Local Concerns, Global Challenges” was the perfect platform for Dan Nelson (Maxwell School of Syracuse University), Rosemary O’Leary (University of Kansas School of Public Affairs), and Nidhi Vig (Maxwell School of Syracuse University) to present their paper focused on understanding how senior Indian Forest Service officers use collaboration as a management and leadership strategy. With the objective to understand their collaborative experiences, the Maxwell team discussed how the IFS officers use collaboration as a strategic tool, and the catalysts and challenges they often face while collaborating. IFS officials shared their recent experiences on collaboration and this work is being developed into a larger study to compare and contrast their views with senior officials within the U.S. Government.
